Solid Waste Management Rules revised

In April.2016, Ministry of Environment & Forests (Government of India), has revised solid waste management rules in the country after 16 years. Major highlights of changes have been- 1) extension of rules beyond municipal areas to industrial townships, ports, and areas under railways and airports; 2) responsibility of generators has been introduced to segregate waste into three categories – Wet, Dry and Hazardous Waste. The generator will have to pay ‘User Fee’ to the waste collector and a ‘Spot Fine’ for littering and non-segregation, the quantum of which will be decided by the local bodies and 3) waste processing facilities will have to be set up by all local bodies having 1 million or more population within two years.
